Yes the 1.9 is relatively quiet and smooth, but to me it is soulless and anaemic. The 1.4, courtesy of its three cylinder engine, has a wonderful resonance and off-beat burble and hence character. I prefer the 1.4TDI engine to the 105bhp 1.9TDI. Go for the 1.9 you'll kick yourself if you buy the 1.4.
